History

The Brisbane office of Peddle Thorp opened in 1963, upon being awarded a major design commission for the development of a strategic landholding in Eagle Street and in contact with the Brisbane River.

The commission led to the construction of two major buildings in the central business district and at the time were the forefront of the city's renewal.

The first stage at 145 Eagle Street, received the Civic Design Bronze Medal from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, in recognition of the developments contribution to the urban context. The firms successful beginnings have continued and its high standard of design quality is demonstrated by the award of many accolades from its peer group and the business community.

After a successful start in Brisbane, the practice activities extended into the beginning of the development era of the Gold Coast. The firms design of shopping centres and hotels has contributed to the success of Australia's premier resort location.

In its formative years, the firm undertook the design of many commercial properties, and has been responsible for the largest number of office buildings in Brisbane. The period of high activity in the late 1970's culminated in the successful completion of the AMP Building, at the time Brisbane's most advanced high rise building. The firms second decade also saw it expanding its capacity and capability in the establishment of specific design disciplines, such as health care, interior design and landscape architecture.

Peddle Thorp health care design capability is extensive and varied with commissions undertaken for the Mater Misericordiae Hospital along with several projects for the State Governments Redevelopment programme.

The developed skills and resources has enabled the firm to provide design services in the pacific rim and South East Asia, and has participated in the establishment of other Peddle Thorp offices in Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong, Cairns, Darwin, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

Since its beginnings in 1963, the Brisbane practice of Peddle Thorp has developed into a multi skilled architectural practice.

The firm has been responsible for many varied commissions in Brisbane and Queensland, along with high rise apartments in Jakarta and Hong Kong, Health Care facilities in Singapore, corporate high rise headquarters in Auckland, Sports and Entertainment Facilities in Christchurch, Government complexes in Port Moresby and Resort Hotel projects in Bali.

This firms accumulated expertise and its increased participation in the overseas markets has allowed it to develop into a true international practice providing a quality of service and excellence of design to respond to the expected demands of the new millennium.
