QUT Art Museum
Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia

The challenge of converting the lowest level of one on the universities original buildings into an international standard art museum posed an enormous challenge in creating suitable spaces, identity and environment.

Careful planning of spaces and limited alteration of the original supporting structure opened the small spaces to create a connecting series of galleries along a spine wall which provides orientation. At either end of the spine are glimpses to the outside via new penetrations through the external fabric.

In order to provide suitable height in the galleries, floor levels have been lowered by nearly one metre in gallery spaces. These floors, finished in polished timber to highlight their difference, are accessed from the entry foyer by transition stairs and ramped vestibules that are gallery spaces.

The ambience is peaceful, contemporary, light and open, a result of the detailed resolution of the spaces and materials.
