The clients were looking to create a ‘sensible house’ for the tropics. More specifically, the house should be a response to the site aspect, prevailing breezes, micro-climate and vegetation. Additional emphasis was placed on the use of natural forms of ventilation, generous shade overhangs, and flexible indoor/outdoor living spaces.

Car accommodation was located close to the street with access to the house via a covered bridge spanning the sites primary creek bed The boomerang plan form lent itself to a linear progression of spaces from living to private contained in 2 wings – One with children’s bedrooms, bathroom and laundry area, and the other with kitchen/living, study, main bedroom and ensuite The steeply sloping site has the house at 30cm above ground at one end, and 8.0m above ground at the highest point. Each wing is joined at the central entry area with cascading roofs that continue over the bridge and walkway link to the carport area.
