Situated adjacent to the Brisbane's SouthBank Parklands, the Centre is designed to form an undulating backdrop to the gardens using a series of three dimensional anticlastic 'shell' forms. Apart from individualising the halls to strengthen their identity, the roofs provide superior design loads for exhibition suspension and increased exhibition volumes over conventional structures through the shell forms avoiding the need for supporting substructure. A sequence of verandahs along the main exhibition centre concourse are shaded by continuation of the main roof geometry. The structure descends as low as possible along the frontages to achieve human scale. The sweeping curving main roof and verandah edges make reference to Australia's subtropical vernacular and establish a contextural identity. The centre comprises five main exhibition halls, one of which contains a mechanically operated seating system that can raise and lower seating to facilitate conventions for up to 4000 delegates. A 2000 seat ballroom with adjacent terrace overlooks the city skyline. Twenty meeting rooms, ranging from 50 to 1,000 square metres provide a variety of conference and functions facilities. The halls are each clear span and contiguous in plan to provide for exhibition space up to 25,000 metres square. The exhibition halls expose the roof structure which directly reflects the three-dimensional geometry. Cox Rayner Architects.with Peddle Thorp Architects AWARDS: AREA: 35,
