THE DETAILS
"Their designs take into account the end user requirements, and are appropriately designed for the environs they are located within. Peddle Thorp have displayed an ongoing commitment to the professional delivery of projects from Concept Design to Practical Completion, in what can be at times challenging conditions, on many Diocesan projects." - Shane Watson, Diocesan Project Services, Catholic Diocese of Cairns
Peddle Thorp Far North were commissioned as the principal consultants by the Catholic Diocese of Cairns for the design and project management of this new greenfield site school, located on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the township of Weipa.
The design and layout for St Joseph’s was formulated around a new framework for teaching and learning within the class room. With a centralised multi-use break out space and large pull back doors to the encompassing class room areas, the learning building has been designed to provide flexibility between collaborative and private teaching spaces.
Blocks of colour line the external entry ways to classrooms. These spill onto the floor allowing for a definition of space without the need for physical walls. Perforated metal screens with featured local indigenous artwork line the entrance to the school allowing the community to identity with the new facility.
