THE MERCY CENTRE | INTERIORS
The Mercy Centre at the Mater Private Hospital Townsville is a Clinical Services Building providing contemporary health care services for the north Queensland region.
The facility provides 4 additional operating theatres for the campus, when combined with the 8 existing theatres, The Mercy Centre increases the hospitals total theatre count to 12, expanding their Day of Surgery Admissions capacity.
The interior design concept for the facility is centred on creating comfortable, human scale spaces with the use of warm colours, textures and materials, creating a friendly and inviting environment for patient, staff and visitors. Due to the clinical, institutional nature of the building’s functionality, a key objective was to create relaxing spaces where possible through the entry and waiting zones. Spaces with a residential feel, allowing patients to feel at home, with the aim to reduce stress and anxiety whilst in facility.
Upon arrival, the lowered ceiling height of the porte-cochere and airlock leads patients and visitors through the entry zone into the double storey lobby with connection through to the existing hospital buildings. Principally the material palette was selected to create a continuity of space, the use of similar colours throughout the facility double as intuitive wayfinding, providing a seamless connection between the new and old. Within the clinical areas of the facility, all finishes were selected with a high importance placed on infection control and durability. The creation of a consistent patient journey was a priority for the Mater, with patient privacy being a key driver of the design intent.
The development forms stage 1 of the 10 year master-plan for the Hospital site.
