BHC and Blue Care Bowen Court refurbishment transformed the existing 1960’s unit block into 51 affordable housing units that embrace the open plan living concept to maximise light and spatial quality of the tight unit footprint.
All residential units now contain a bedroom, combined bathroom and laundry, open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. A few select units have new balconies whilst the ground floor ones open onto small garden courtyards which provide private outdoor retreat for residents. By redesigning the existing undercroft car parking bays, we were able to give residents better access to facilities such as multipurpose rooms, scooter charging stations, bicycle parking, and external storage.
Internal finishes are light, neutral and warm with low-maintenance, safety and durability being a priority. Mirrored sliding-door robes create the illusion of larger bedrooms whilst the use of timber look-alike vinyl flooring adds warmth and familiarity. It was recognised with the UDIA Affordable Housing Award 2017.
